Why a racket beats waiting
Few things are as annoying as the whine of a mosquito circling in the dark. You wave, it stops, you settle, and it starts again the moment you relax.
The reason a rolled newspaper fails is that it needs the mosquito to land somewhere you can hit it. A racket removes that condition. You sweep it through the air where the insect is flying, and the large surface means you do not have to be precise about it.
The flash and the pop tell you it connected, and nothing ends up on the paintwork.
Charging rather than batteries
It runs on USB. That sounds like a small detail and it is the difference between a working racket and a dead one.
A device like this lives in a drawer for eleven months and is needed urgently in the twelfth. If it takes disposable batteries, the ones inside are flat and the right size is not in the house. A charge cable, you have. It also works off a power bank, which is why these go camping.
What it does not do
This is the part that decides it for most people.
There's no spray, so nothing settles on the surfaces in the room. There's no residue and no chemical smell, so you can use it in a bedroom minutes before sleeping in it. It is quiet beyond the pop. And the surface is safe for humans to touch, so it is family and pet safe in a way a plug-in vaporiser or an aerosol is not.
In a nursery, a tent or a small bedroom, those absences matter more than raw effectiveness. Treat it as the electrical item it is and keep it out of small hands, but there is nothing on it to worry about.
Using it well
Do not swing hard. Contact is what matters, not force, and a hard swing pushes air ahead of the racket that shoves a light insect out of the way.
Sweep steadily through the space around the mosquito rather than aiming at exactly where it is. Mosquitoes drift rather than fly in straight lines, so the space is a better target than the insect.
Use the LED. Turning the main light on wakes everyone and sends the mosquito to the ceiling. The handle light gives you enough to track one without either.
It is not a substitute for a screen
Worth saying plainly. A window screen stops mosquitoes entering the room at all, which will always beat dealing with them once they are inside. If you are being bitten every night in summer, the screen is the fix and the racket is what handles the ones that got in before you closed up.
