"description_short": "Self-adhesive magnetic strip sold per metre, the fixing that holds a magnetic window screen to the frame and lifts away without marking it.",
"description": "The part that makes the system work\n\nA magnetic window screen holds on because there is a strip of magnetic material stuck around the\nwindow frame for it to grip. No screws, no drilling, no holes.\n\nThis is that strip, sold on its own by the metre, for when you are building a screen from parts,\nrepairing a run that has lifted, or extending an existing screen onto another window.\n\nWorking out how much\n\nPerimeter, not area. Twice the width plus twice the height.\n\nA 100 cm by 150 cm window comes to 5 metres. Order a little over that, because the corners and one\nmis-cut eat more than people expect, and running out three sides into a four-sided job is a\nfrustrating way to end an afternoon.\n\nFitting it properly\n\nThis is where it either works for years or lifts in a fortnight, and the difference is almost\nentirely surface preparation.\n\nWipe the frame face down and let it dry completely. Dust, grease or damp under the adhesive is the\nsingle most common reason a strip comes away later, and the adhesive only gets one attempt at\nbonding.\n\nPeel the backing as you work rather than all at once. Press the strip down along its whole length,\nnot just at the ends. A strip tacked at the ends looks fitted and is not, and it will lift in the\nmiddle first.\n\nDo each side as its own length rather than bending one continuous run around the corners. It is\neasier to control and the corners end up neater.\n\nWhy not just use screws\n\nBecause of what happens when you take it off.\n\nMagnetic strip lifts away without pulling the frame finish with it. That's what puts these\nscreens into rented flats, where a drill is out of the question, and it is why people are happy to\nrun them seasonally: the screen and the strip both come off at the end of summer and the window\nlooks untouched.\n\nWhen a strip fails\n\nReplace the run, not the lot. Cut a fresh length, clean the frame properly, and press it down.\n\nIt is worth knowing that magnetic strip does not lose its magnetism through use. If a screen has\nstarted sagging away from the frame, the problem is the adhesive bond or something on the face of\nthe strip, not the magnet. Grit is the usual culprit: anything sitting on the face holds the\nscreen a fraction proud, and a fraction along a whole edge is a gap.",
"llm_summary": "Magnetic Strip sold per metre, the self-adhesive fixing that holds a magnetic window flyscreen onto the window frame. Flexible magnetic strip with a self-adhesive backing, applied to the flat face of the frame around the opening; the screen then grips it magnetically. Cuts to length with scissors. Sold by the metre so the customer orders the perimeter of their own window plus a small allowance. Removes without damaging the frame finish, which is why magnetic screens suit rented properties where drilling is not possible. Bought to build a new screen, to repair a run that has lifted, or to extend an existing screen.",
